  Rochester, NY isn't exactly synonymous with blues but believe it or not there is a good local blues scene. In this section we'll keep you up to date on  local blues bands and what venues usually have live blues. Also make sure to use the search feature to find out who's playing in town and where. We hope this will come in handy not only for those in the area but also to those passing through town.


Blues Bands

Joe Beard: Rochester's main man of the blues who's finally getting some national recognition. Joe's recorded four CD's for the Audioquest label including his latest called "Dealin'" which features Duke Robillard. A documentary of Joe Beard is currently in progress.

Chris Beard: Joe Beard's son who recorded his debut, "Barwalkin'", for JSP in 1997 followed with "Born To Play The Blues" and "Live Wire" in 2005 on Northern Blues. He was nominated for a Handy award in 1998. Find out more at: www.chrisbeardband.com

The Nightstalkers: The Nightstalkers play hard driving blues featuring Marshall James on vocals. They have two CD's under their belts.

The Coupe De Villes: The Coupes have recorded several CD's including "Blues for You" and in 2006 "Burnin' Live At WITR." Find out more about the Coupes at www.coupedevilles.com.

The John Cole Blues Band: Joe Beard's ex guitarist out on his own. They've recorded one CD called "The Secret Is Out!."

Joe Likley & The Midnight Blues Band: Veteran blues singer who's worked with Joe Beard, Larry Davis, Junior Parker and others.

Fred Vine: Acoustic bluesman. Wrote the theme song for Bad Dog Blues. He released "Mister Freddie Blues" in 2001. Find out more at: www.fredvine.com

Roosevelt Dean and the Spellbinders: Syracuse bluesman who's recorded several CD's and plays Rochester often. In 2006 he released "Touch Somebody's Hand" and "Don't Leave Me." Find out more at http://home.twcny.rr.com/rooseveltdean.

The Lowriders: Play a variety of blues and blues rock. Check them out on the web at http://members.aol.com/lowrydrz.

Steve Grills and the Roadmasters: Hard drivin' Chicago style blues.

Rockin' Roz: Blues with a touch of soul and R&B.

The ElectroKings: They focus on the danceable roots of American music, such as blues, swing, and good old rock and roll. Find out more at: www.theelectrokings.com

Texas Son: Guitar driven electric blues. Find out more at: www.texasonblues.com

Rockin' Red:  One of Rochester's premiere harp players.

Dan Schimdt and the Shadows: One of Rochester's hardest working blues bands.

Campbell Brothers: Pedal steel gospel. Highly acclaimed releases on Arhoolie including "Pass Me Not", "Sacred Steel on Tour!", "Sacred Steel For The Holidays" and are featured on "Sacred Steel- Live!." In 2005 they issued the critically lauded "Can You Feel It?" on Rope-a-Dope. heck them out at www.campbellbrothers.com.

Brown Brothers: Accapella gospel in a Jubilee style.

Smokin' Section: Steeped in the boogie traditions of John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddly, Canned Heat, etc., with a strong emphasis on jump and funk style blues of artists such as Jimmy Reed and Albert King. Their CD "Here Kitty, Kitty" is now available.

Rockin' Robin and the Bucket of  Blues
: Play a variety of styles from B.B. King to hard driving Chicago blues.

The Jonathan Feldman Trio: Play half jazz and half Chicago blues. Their new CD is called "Straight Ahead & Blue."

Certified Groove: Play a variety of blues styles such as T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Downchild, The Thunderbirds and many more.

Third Degree: Hard driving, rock 'n' blues quartet. Play songs by Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers, Louis Jordon, Freddie King and others.

The Mary Haitz Band: Nominated for best female Blues vocalist at the Buffalo Music awards.
They have one CD out called "No Borders."

Los Blancos: They've been compared to The Radiators, Little Feat, The Neville Brothers, The Band, and a whole posse of other breeders of American Music. Find out more at www.casablancos.com

Too Tall: A regular on the local blues scene. Released the CD "Fixin' To Kill My Guitar" in 2002 with the help of many local blues veterans.

Sidepocket: Dave (Doc) Salatino, Dave Lott, Dean Miller and Mike Patrick bring you their version of todays Rock, Funk & Blues from Robin Ford to CoCo Montoya plus much more.

The New Trendsetters: Veterans that perform in the Chicago and Texas Blues styles. They blend virtuosity with dynamic, tight arrangements and roll those elements into a tongue-in-cheek, high energy, interactive performance. They call their brand of Blues "Champale Music", bringing to life the now-defunct Champale Malt Liquor slogan, "make any day a holiday... Enjoy like Champagne!" The White Hots: Jazzy blues quartet consisting of veteran blues and jazz players. Play instrumental covers and orginals. Released the CD "Live at The Little "in 2002 and "Caught In The Act " in 2006.

The Hell Hounds: Play traditional and original acoustic blues rooted in the styles of the Mississippi Delta and East Coast Piedmont regions. They have three CD's out with the latest titled "Can't Take It With Ya." Find out more at www.thehellhounds.com

The Frogg Men: Thee house band at Froggy's Bar & Grill playing every Wednedsay night from 8-11, playing rockin' Blues w/special guests.

Jay Formicola: Plays a mix of standard and modern blues styles. The traditional blues are approached with reverence while introducing his own style of over the top, from the heart, string wrangling and Vocals. Find out more at: www.jformicola.com

Keith Harden: Keith Harden is an accomplished and versatile guitarist-singer whose style and repertoire comes from roots music, folk, blues, rock and americana. Swamp Padres: Deliver the irresistible grooves of Louisiana-inspired dance music with the lyrical voice of the electric, slide, and steel guitars, the driving pulse of zydeco button accordion, trance-inducing rubboard, and a full-tilt rhythm section.

Mark Charles & The Blues Express: Mark Charles & The Blues Express, is a hard rockin' newly reformed blues outfit that plays a variety of high energy blues and rock blues. They do songs from the Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Winter, Lonnie Mack, Albert King, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, and Freddy King catalogs.
