Skeeter
Brandon & Highway 61 Live At The
Dinosaur Bar-B-Q
Since
the
Dinosaur Bar-B-Q opened a couple of years ago there's been no shortage of
national blues acts coming to Rochester. Wednesday is the night the
Dinosaur usually has out of town acts and this time we were treated to the
rocking, soulful sound of North Carolina bluesman Skeeter Brandon
with his band Highway 61.
The three piece band is tight but the focus is on the gospel soaked vocals
and keyboard playing of Skeeter Brandon. The band stick mainly to material
from their most recent record including the jumping "Get
Loaded", "Blues In My Bones" and "I'm A Man Of My
Word." Skeeter and the band also dip into some older material
including "Aw Shucks Baby" and the rocking "She's A Real
Upsetter" sounding like an old Chuck Berry classic.
It
isn't long before the small crowd is won over before Skeeter goes in for
the show stopper. He launches into the well worn "When A Man Loves A
Woman" but really sinks his teeth into mixing in a medley of soul
classics form Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Brook Benton and Johnny
Taylor-this man can really belt it out! All in all a great show with
plenty of fine originals and some serious blues and soul.
